Grass: a collective gardening for truth is a series of digital events that intend to visualise manufactured public opinion. Through online events the user is given the opportunity to discover a current example of the astroturfing phenomenon. Astroturfing is the creation of fake grassroots movements to influence public opinion. Their real corporate or governmental funding are often hidden. Astroturf is also a brand of fake grass.
During the events the project creates, the user is asked, collectively with other participants, to destroy the layer of grass that hides the truth by using several gardening tools. The goal can only be attained when the users collectively work together to dig through, pull and cut the grass to access what is underneath. The project aims to raise awareness on this type of manipulated information and ultimately, through a playful digital gardening process, guide the user towards the truth.
